Tears and drama seem to be standard for any reality show, and even more so when it involves people living together and competing against each other. This week on the Caribbean’s Next Top Model, that drama centred around makeovers and one particular contestant.

Have you ever wondered if people deliberately play to the cameras during these shows? Well Yugge (St. Vincent) was soundly chastised by host Wendy Fitzwilliam for performing for the cameras. She said Yugge’s behaviour was highly unprofessional and unacceptable. Fitzwilliam said if her photograph hadn’t been close to perfect and she wasn’t talented, she would have been sent home immediately.
Before that, Yugge and Nicoya (Antigua and Barbuda) quarreled. Yugge commented that some of the other models couldn’t have an argument without talking about violence. Nicoya responded that nobody would want Yugge because of her attitude and Yugge accused Nicoya of being fake. Nicoya got up in her face screaming and had to be pulled away by some of the others. Yugge said remaining calm would ultimately benefit her in the competition.
The makeovers were another source of drama. Some contestants had no problem with their new styles, while others lamented the loss of their hair. Ayana (St. Lucia) had to fight back tears when she heard she was going to have her hair cut, textured and coloured, because she said she’d been growing her natural hair out and it had just gotten to the point where it could be plaited. Mackella (Jamaica) also had a problem with her hair being straightened because she’d never done it before. Nicoya (Antigua and Barbuda) broke down in tears when her long hair was cut and the back shaved.
The theme for the episode was beauty, so the women did a makeup challenge, judged by guest judge Barbadian model Lene Hall, who was the first Caribbean woman to land four major beauty campaigns – Revlon, Prescriptives, Clinique and Fashion Fair. Mackella (Jamaica) won the of a personalized makeup kit. She said she was overwhelmed to have won. Following their makeovers, the models did a photoshoot, which was the basis of the judging panel, consisting of Fitzwilliam, Hall, Richard Young and photographer Pedro Virgil.
Lia (T&T) won the overall competition for this week. Yugge wasn’t sent home, although her name was called last overall, and Fitzwilliam told her to put her determination to win towards being the consummate professional from now on. The bottom two were Racquel and Carol-Ann, whom Fitzwilliam said had great potential, but fell flat in front of the camera. In the end, both women were sent home.
Stay tuned for next week’s episode, where the models might possibly doing a nude (or close to it) photoshoot. Which woman will next week’s drama centre around? Will it be Ayana (St. Lucia) or Yugge (St. Vincent) or somebody else?
