Band brings A game to the party (March 15, 2019)

For the A Team Band, Carnival 2019 was a good one, as they backed some of the biggest names in the soca business. The band, which has been around since 2013, has built a reputation as one of the best backing bands in T&T.

Production Manager Brennon Vergil said the original members of the band met while working together in another band. “When it closed, we decided to continue on as our own entity. We had already built solid relationships with many local artistes so we established a fresh approach, put better structures in place and forged on. The band currently retains about half of the original team and in the past has been the band of choice for competitions like the International Soca Monarch.”

The band is managed by Zarin Morean, and consists of frontline vocalists Kerlene M Kerlz Joseph, Edwin Eddie Charles and Nicholas Prescott, along with musical director/bassist Miguel Charles, keyboardists Joshua Cines and Kellan Douglas, bassist Keron Charles, percussionists Keron Robinson and Kwami Mollineau, and drummer Kareem Romain.

Vergil said during the season, the A Team Band graced the stage at events such as SOS, Machel Monday, Army Fete, PNM Fete, Ultimate One All Inclusive, Masquerade Al Inclusive, Soca Town, Police Cooler Fete, Prestige All Inclusive, Gateway to the World All Inclusive and Calypso Fiesta, Brass Bacchanal, Strength of A Woman, I Shall The Concert and others.

He said “we have done the work, grown musically and are proud to have shown our capabilities. We are accustomed to mixing and playing all genres of music, so when we work with a solo act it’s easy to fall into any groove and give them that tight well-rehearsed sound. No genre of music is foreign to us. We dabble in everything.”

Morean said the band was in peak condition heading into the season and has worked with a number of star acts. “We are at an ideal time in our cycle where our musicians are not only seasoned but share great chemistry with others and as on their own musical unit – that cannot be understated. Add to that the versatility of our band.”

Vergil said the highlights of the band’s season were being able to share the stage at concerts held by soca artists that had believed in them from day one. “Patrice Roberts’ Strength of Woman and I Shall by Shall Marshall were amazing events that we gave priority to, noting that these artists were set to make a statement and being the band of choice, we gave it our all. Also, being a part of the I Shine Competition put on by TTEN TV was an amazing experience as well. As a band we got to meet, advise, nurture and support the aspiring artists which gave them a sense of musical direction they can utilize. Being able to be any and everywhere this season is a great accomplishment for us as this has been one of the most hectic and successful seasons we had.”

He said although they were disappointed in their placement in Brass Bacchanal, “we recognize that the judge’s decision was final and at this time for us everything we encounter is a learning experience. We take what we can from each experience and move along with positivity.”

Vergil said in the future, the band plans to “constantly improve on our musical ability and take our performances internationally. We have already secured post carnival regional bookings and are looking forward to these events as well. As for the long run, we the A Team Band seek to take our band and brand internationally representing our country and culture by extension.”
