Farce based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Swineherd
Playwrights Workshop Trinbago’s (PWT) Monthly Readers Theatre Series (MRTS), held the first Wednesday of every month, will be reading Atascadero! written by H.D. Greaves for the September 2019 instalment. The reading takes place at the National Drama Association of Trinidad and Tobago’s (NDATT) Studios, located at 97 Southern Main Road, Curepe on September 4, starting at 7 pm.
H.D. Greaves, now approaching 81, is a Trinidadian born playwright, novelist, short story writer and poet. His work is found worldwide on Amazon and on Barnes & Noble Booksellers. He continues to write and to help other writers to achieve success. Recently, Greaves was the Dramaturge and Director in the NDATT and PWT’s Play Development Workshop 2019, wherein he helped three playwrights develop their scripts. These plays were read in a Dramatic Reading held during Carifesta XIV, at the NDATT Studios.
Atascadero! is a one-act farce based on The Swineherd, a Hans Christian Andersen morality fable which Andersen admitted he first heard as a bawdy joke. The play is set in Brazil, uses samba music throughout and does not change Andersen’s unusual, and to many people, controversial finale. While it has been successfully produced in the U.S. many times, the playwright would like to see it staged here in Trinidad. This is the first time Atascadero! is being heard in T&T.
Playwrights Workshop Trinbago (PWT) is inviting actors, playwrights, directors, producers and the general public to the reading to provide the playwright with feedback, to further develop his script. The event will be held on September 4 2019, 7 PM at the NDATT Studios, 97 Southern Main Road, Curepe. Admission is FREE. About the Playwrights Workshop Trinbago
PWT is an organization coordinated by playwrights for the making of plays. The organization is dedicated to the memory and work of renowned Trinidadian scholar, academic, theatre historian, playwright and director ERROL HILL (1921-2003) and Tobagonian poet, playwright, essayist and journalist ERIC ROACH (1915-1974).
This year, the workshop initiated in 2003 by Tony Hall with support from Trinity in Trinidad Study Away Programme of Trinity College, Hartford, C.T. Lordstreet Theatre’s Jouvay Institute and the National Drama Association of Trinidad & Tobago, celebrates its 16th Anniversary. It continues to have its Monthly Readers Theatre Series on the first Wednesday of every month, at the new NDATT headquarters. Playwrights and aspiring playwrights are reminded that play scripts read at the Monthly Readers Theatre Series can qualify for further development at the Annual New Play Festival in the following year.
