Curtain Call Consulting Company Ltd. will be presenting its Christmas concert, Jazz Noel, on November 17 at the Little Carib Theatre. The concert will feature a mix of genres and generations, with performers Mavis John and Lord Relator alongside Dean Williams and Candice Alcantara.
Curtain Call Director Giselle Alcantara said the name Jazz Noel “helps to translate the theme of the production, namely traditional Christmas melodies, jazz standards and local classics. It tells people what they can expect. Jazz Noel emerged as the perfect name when we were tossing names around. It is simple and communicates what we want to say.”
The iconic Mavis John has been singing since the 1960s and her distinctive voice lends itself easily to blues, jazz and soul. She has shared the stage with both local and international legends, and continues to amaze audiences with her dynamic range and engaging presence. Lord Relator is the consummate elite entertainer, who has also been singing since the 1960’s. He became the National Junior Calypso Monarch in 1965 and later ascended to the rank of National Calypso Monarch in 1980, as a member of the Lord Kitchener Calypso tent. Lord Relator has traversed the world, charming audiences with his unique style and wit. Fans of the Dean Williams Quartet know them for their unique, scintillating performances and fluid improvisation. Their repertoire spans various genres including R&B, Funk, Smooth Jazz, Bossa Nova, Jazz fusion and original Pan and Calypso Jazz. Local songstress Candice Alcantara will give voice to well-known local and international Christmas favourites.
Giselle Alcantara said she believed the combination of performers is awesome and hopes that others do as well. “All the musicians are top class performers and have each held their own in successful individual productions. We love to bring together artistes who may not have performed together on the same stage for some time or at all. Yet, these performers must all have a cohesive thread so that the event feels like one package. Dean Williams and Lord Relator each have distinctive guitar playing and performance styles. Candice Alcantara and Mavis John have performed together before, and while they are both female vocalists, they bring a different flavour to the mix. I guess they all help to put the Jazz in the Callaloo. Of course, there is also the element of the mix of musical generations. We want audiences to discover music that they may not have realized that they appreciate.”
She said the mix of generations and generations present in this concert is one of the hallmarks of productions put on by the arts and entertainment company. “It’s all about good music in a quality package. The genre does not matter but I believe that generally people know good music when they hear it and that is what we want them to experience. We always ensure that Caribbean music is included in the programme. Our music is so diverse and beautiful and there are many opportunities for experimentation. In our productions we find that audiences respond most to the local work. This is true whether it is performed in its traditional format or if we present a new take on a well-known local piece. Nostalgia is a powerful amplifier for artistic expression.”
Curtain Call Consulting Co. Ltd is an arts management and event production company registered in T&T. Curtain Call fills the gap between the commercial and creative perspectives, to find the right balance for its clients and provide consistently high quality entertainment experiences for audiences. Previous Curtain Call productions have included talents such as 3 Canal, Mungal Patasar, Vaughnette Bigford and Élan Parlé. Alcantara said “After one of our recent productions, a member of the audience told us that they felt as though they had cheated us. They had gotten so much more than their contribution that they felt as though they profited more than we did. That is what we like to hear. We work hard to live up to our reputation. Our shows start on time, are well packaged and there is always a wonderful energy.”
Alcantara said “Jazz Noel is a definite must-attend event for true music lovers who want to enjoy quality music in a comfortable setting. This is a rare occasion to experience two of T&T’s most prolific musical icons on one night.”
