The Rotaract Club of Port-of-Spain West, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Port-of-Spain, will be hosting its second Annual Fun Day for Children with Disabilities. The event will take place on December 8 at Nelson Mandela Park.
Community Service Director 2018/2019, Mishaal Primer said the fun day is one of the club’s signature events in celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed worldwide on December 3. “The event promotes the inclusion of kids with disabilities and celebrates them especially for that occasion. The cause of promoting inclusion of children with disabilities through play can be beneficial for all children. The event provides an opportunity for children without disabilities to develop a different outlook on the world they live in and allows children with disabilities to engage in physical activity which can often be challenging for them because of various obstacles. This Fun Day can provide an opportunity for children with a diverse range of abilities to engage in the same activities side by side and hopefully facilitate in helping them to develop an awareness, respect and understanding of people with all abilities.”
Primer said the venue was chosen for its accessibility to persons with disabilities. She said the games and activities planned will facilitate play and interaction by all children who attend, regardless of their abilities. “We have invited institutions such as Lady Hochoy, Princess Elizabeth, Goodwill Industries and Charis Works and the following orphanages: Rainbow Rescue, Credo House, Sophia House and New Beginnings. It is our hope to promote inclusion and provide the kids with a day filled with fun.”
Primer said this is the only project the club has planned this year for children with disabilities. “It is our hope to continue to do this annually, as well as develop other project with the focus of children with disabilities.”
PRO Sherika Herbert said the Rotaract Club of Port of Spain West is a Rotary-sponsored, service club tailored for young leaders between the ages 18-30 years. Members facilitate and participate in various events throughout the year. “The Rotary Foundation is a means to help us serve our communities better and create lasting change.”
Rotaract Clubs are part of the Rotary International group, which also include Interact Clubs for secondary school students. Through global grants and other resources, Rotary International is able to help Rotary/Rotaract/Interact clubs focus their service efforts on promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education and growing local economies.
